Dive to the Legendary HMS PERSEUS – Kefalonia 2025
A mission of honor, history, and exploration
The recent expedition of the Hellas Underwater Explorers (HUE) to Kefalonia was successfully completed. The team, organized by George Petrou and Vasilis Petroulias, dived to the legendary wreck of the British submarine HMS Perseus and explored the impressive Karavomylos lake cave.
The HMS Perseus, a Parthian-class submarine, was built in 1929 and sank in 1941 in the waters of Kefalonia during World War II. Of the entire crew, only one man, John Capes, survived. Using a Davis breathing device and the determination of a true hero, he escaped the sunken vessel and embarked on an odyssey that lasted for months until he reached Alexandria. His story remains one of the most extraordinary survival feats in naval history.
The dive was conducted with the utmost respect and sense of responsibility toward this underwater memorial and its lost crew. The Perseus remains to this day at the bottom of the Ionian Sea as a silent sentinel of history.
